Charles Edwin Odom, 94, of Rockwell, passed away Friday, November 23, 2018 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury, NC.
He was born February 18, 1924 in Raeford, NC to the late William and Sally Johnson Odom. Charles was a 1943 graduate of Raeford Hoke High School. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in England, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland, and Germany and at the Battle of the Bulge.
Charles was a member of St. James Lutheran Church where he served on Church Council and was a former Sunday School Teacher. Upon returning from WWII, he worked and lived at Powles Funeral Home in Rockwell for a couple years, he then went to work for Cannon Mills Plant No. 6, then he went to work for Fiber in 1965, and retired in 1986.
Charles was a member of Woodmen of the World and the Miller Russell American Legion Post 112. He loved watching baseball games, hunting, fishing, and going to the river.
Charles was one of the organizing and founding members of the Rockwell Rural Volunteer Fire Department, serving as the 2nd Chief, and was active until his health prevented.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sisters, Carol Keilman, and Kaye Odom.
Charles is survived by his wife of over 71 years, Thelma Gladys Odom, whom he married October 19, 1947; son, Eddie W. Odom; daughter, Tina A. Odom both of Rockwell; grandsons, Christopher Edwin Odom and wife Danielle of Mint Hill, Joseph Chad Odom and wife Wendy of Monroe; granddaughter, Corrie Amanda Hamm and husband Robert of Monroe; and 7 great-grandchildren.
The family will greet friends and relatives on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, in the Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC, with Rev. Jason Huebner, officiating.
Burial will follow at the St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery.
