Pastor James Joseph “Joe” Black, 81, of Salisbury, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018 at his home in Salisbury.
He was born June 3, 1937 in Kannapolis, to the late James and Winnie Jordan Black. Pastor Joe was a veteran of the United States Army.
Pastor Joe and his wife Mick owned and operated Black’s Manufacturing in China Grove for over 15 years where the entire family was involved in furniture manufacturing. Then they owned and operated Black’s Upholstery, where Pastor Joe worked up until 2017.
He was the faithful pastor of Eastside Baptist Church in Salisbury for over 29 years, Pastor Joe loved his little church and his congregation. Prior to Eastside, he was a member of Southside Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacons, the men’s Sunday school class teacher and a member of the choir. He spent his life sharing God’s work from the pulpit as an interim pastor before becoming pastor at Eastside Baptist Church.
He enjoyed time spent on the farm, taking his wife Mick fishing, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lois “Mick” Black; sister, Patsy Amos; and brother, Don Black.
Pastor Joe is survived by his sons, Sam Black and wife Robin of Gold Hill and Dan Black and fiancée Sandy Mullins of Salisbury; daughters, Lydia Black Foy and husband Dwayne of Salisbury and Cindy Black Tucker and husband Steve of Browns Summit; granddaughters, Elisha Wilson and husband Robert, Wendy Kluttz and husband Jason, Tammy Morrison and husband Martin, Olivia Eddins and husband David, Ashley Currin and husband Madison and Crystal Foy Mullins and husband Anthony; grandsons, Mark Tucker and Heather and Daniel Black and wife Ashley; great-granddaughters, Aubrey, Millie, Brandy, Caitlin, Katherine, Harper, Taylor and Lyncoln; great-grandsons, Dylan, Parker, Finley, Baker James, Dakota, Ryan, Tucker and Braylen; and sisters, Peggy Leslie, Marcella Smith and husband Harold, Kenetha Honeycutt and husband Bill, and Robin Williams and husband Tommy.
Visitation: The family will greet friends and relatives on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell.
Service: The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018, at Eastside Baptist Church, Salisbury, with Joe’s son-in-law, Dr. Steve Tucker of Altamahaw Baptist Church in Elon, officiating. Burial will follow in Brookhill Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites provided by the North Carolina National Guard and the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
