Mildred Sickler Vrooman, 94, of Rockwell, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018.
She was born July 28, 1924, in Endicott, NY to the late Ralph and Ethel Howard Sickler. Mrs. Vrooman attended school in Endicott, NY and began employment with Endicott Johnson Shoe Factory prior to her military service. In 1944, she enlisted in the WAVES, the U.S. Naval Reserve and served until the conclusion of WWII.
After moving to North Carolina, Mrs. Vrooman became a Licensed Real Estate Agent in 1982, owning Four Seasons Real Estate in the Salisbury-Rockwell area and maintaining her Real Estate License until 2017. Mrs. Vrooman was known for her extensive and organized recipe collection, baking whoopie pies, and her passion for playing cards. She was a frequent radio contest champion, winning thousands of dollars over the years and taking many trips as a result. During the last 30 years, she enjoyed the fellowship of others at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center in Salisbury where she played cards and attended exercise classes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Edward Nelson Vrooman; sisters, Marion Coles and Laura Every; and son-in-law, John Dulin.
Mrs. Vrooman is survived by her children, Carol Dulin of Flushing, MI, David Vrooman and wife, Griselda, of San Antonio, TX, Karen Mitchell and husband, Donald, of Rockwell, and Keith Vrooman and wife, Lynda, of Salisbury; brother, Ralph Sickler of NY; sister, Hilda Corson of NY; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends and relatives on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at the Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, NC 28144, with Rev. Teresa Peterson, officiating and with Military Graveside Rites by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rufty Holmes Senior Center, 1120 S. MLK Jr. Ave, Salisbury, NC 28144.
