Ralph Neil Horne, 88, of Granite Quarry, NC, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. He was born on August 30, 1929 in Kings Mountain, to the late George Horne and Hattie Maddox Horne. He proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army.
Ralph spent most of his career with the United States Postal Service in Salisbury & Granite Quarry where he became friends with many of the residents. A Co-worker once commented that Ralph was the only Mailman who walked a double route and gained weight. Ralph was not one to turn down a pie or cake baked especially for him. Speaking of pie….This is how Ralph met his wife Joyce 65 years ago, at a Diner in Gastonia, and yes- they were eating “Pie”. Where else is there Pie? The Maddox (mother’s side) Family Reunion, which had to be Ralph’s favorite day of the year. He will miss you all very much.
He enjoyed his 3 grandkids, wood-working and camping at Morrow Mountain. Many people will remember seeing Ralph almost every weekend at the Webb Road Flea Market where he enjoyed making friends with the vendors as well as a good buy. The Horne family would like to recognize a very special person, Kenny Lundy, whom Ralph mentored and treasured like a son.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his son, Brian Keith Horne; brothers, Nelson Horne and Eugene Horne; and sisters, Marion Lingerfeldt, and Peggy Costner.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Joyce Rayfield Horne; three sons, Joey (Leslie Smith) Horne of Cleveland, NC, Eric (Sandra Oldhan) Horne of Granite Quarry, and Christopher C. Horne of Rockwell; 3 Grandchildren, Lauren, Emily & Tyler Horne of Salisbury; a brother, Buster Horne of Salisbury; and his nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved very much. Ralph was especially grateful to Tonya, Laurie and Darlene for their visits and phone calls throughout the years.
A Military Graveside Service will be at 2:00 PM, Thursday, August 2, 2018, at the Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, NC 28144. Military Honors will be provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the NC National Guard.
