Alvin Gray Smith, 80, of Salisbury, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018.
He was born November 7, 1937, in Salisbury, to the late Henry and Blanche McNeely Smith. Mr. Smith attended Granite Quarry High School and was a 1956 graduate of Boyden High School where he was a three sport athlete. At Boyden he played football for Coach Ludwig, basketball for Coach Honeycutt, and baseball for Coach Ferebee. Mr. Smith was a member of the 1955 Rowan American Legion Baseball Team that finished third in the nation, leading him to be a strong supporter of the team in later years. He enjoyed working on, driving, and collecting antique cars, traveling to numerous car shows in the mountains and throughout Tennessee. Mr. Smith was a 42 year employee of the Salisbury Post, where he worked as a Press Operator, retiring in 2014. He formerly attended First Baptist Church of Rockwell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Joyce Austin Smith; three daughters, Rhonda Ward and husband, Jeff, of Salisbury, Kelly Kluttz and husband, Charles, of Salisbury, and Kimberly McCall of Salisbury; son, Rocky Edwards and wife, Roseanne of CA; three grandchildren, Tyler Kluttz and wife, Niya, of Cleveland, Shelby Trexler and husband, Stephen, of Salisbury, and Boyd McCall of Salisbury; and two sisters, Mary Lee Rex of Salisbury and Faye Cole of Denton.
The family will greet friends and relatives on Thursday, June 28, 2018, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 29, 2018, in the Powles Staton Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Joel Hiatt officiating.
Burial will follow in Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.
