Betty Hendren Rufty, 83, of Salisbury, went to be the Lord while surrounded by her family on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Liberty Commons Nursing & Rehabilitation in Salisbury, NC.
She was born August 18, 1934 in Wilkes County NC to the late Clarence Jehu and Zella Tevepaugh Hendren. Betty graduated from Wilkes Central High School and the Rowan Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and received her BSN from Wingate University. Betty dedicated 38 years of her nursing career to the W.G “Bill” Hefner VAMC. She loved caring for the Veterans and was known for holding her staff to the highest standards of care. While at the VA she participated in the conception and design of the new Geropsychiatric unit (Building 42) and was part of a team that travelled to Washington D.C for this effort. After retirement, Betty was instrumental in starting the first Alzheimer's Support Group in Rowan County and served as ombudsman for the county nursing home inspection committee.
Betty was a member of Providence United Methodist Church, and when able was active in the United Methodist Women and Rowan County Meals on Wheels. She was an accomplished cook who loved to cook for her family and friends. Her love of people was demonstrated by her support of numerous charities.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband of over 47 years, Billy Craig Rufty; brothers, Jim Hendren, Max Hendren, John Hendren, and Donald Hendren; sisters, Gladys Campbell, Janie Reid, and Martha Billings Childers; brothers-in-law, Belt Campbell, Tony Powers, Tommy Moore, and James Billings; sisters-in-law, Diane Hendren, Martha Jenkins Hendren, and Thelma Hendren.
Betty is survived by her son, Gary Wayne Burleyson and wife Kristy of Salisbury; daughters, Myra Burleyson Heard and husband Jeff of China Grove, Lisa Burleyson Draper and husband Tim of Rockwell, Lori Burleyson Moore and husband Eric of Rockwell, and Leslie Leigh Burleyson of Salisbury; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; brothers, Lowell Hendren and wife Sue, William Hendren and Roger Hendren; sisters, Elizabeth Oliver and husband Mack, Joann Powers and Sally Moore; sisters-in-law, Margaret Hendren, Elrea Hendren, and Rhoda Ann Hendren; brother-in-law Clay Reid and wife Nancy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends and on Monday, December 4, 2017, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home, Rockwell, NC.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, December 4, 2017, in the Powles Staton Funeral Home Chapel, Rockwell, NC, with Rev. Aldana Allen, officiating.
Burial will take place on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 9:00 am at the Salisbury National Cemetery (Statesville Blvd Location).
In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Betty may be made to Providence United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
