Helen was born in Washington, DC to Ira and Evelyn Pettit of Suitland MD. She was raised with love by her parents, and grew to be a strong vibrant woman. Her death came at age 91 after a lengthy illness and age-related medical complications. She was living temporarily at Chandler Nursing Home in Alabaster AL, and then transferred to Shelby Baptist Memorial Hospital where she passed. She was raised in the southern Maryland area near Suitland, and also in Washington DC. After graduating high school, she became a Federal Civil Servant in the US Navy at the Naval Hydrographic Office in Suitland MD, working her way up in the administration to become the personal secretary of the Navy Captain who led the agency. Her typing and short-hand note taking skills were exceptional, as were her people skills, hence her rise in responsibility. Helen lived in various locations in the Washington DC area, ending up in Clinton MD, where she met the love of her life, John Bishop. They spent many happy years together, as John was truck driving around the country. They formed a trucking-related business in Granite Quarry NC in their older years.

Helen had close friends and neighbors, and enjoyed talking with them about common interests. She loved her children and ensured they always had what they needed to succeed, including teaching them to type! She loved to get the Sears catalog in the mail (the 10-lb. variety, remember those?), and placed many an order from them. She felt it was much easier than shopping. Helen always had a friendly outgoing personality, and everyone around her knew it. She was loved by her family and will be greatly missed.

Helen is survived by five sons; Robert Warren of Maylene, AL; John Warren of Leonardtown, MD; John Bishop of Manchester, MI; Richard Bishop of Gladstone, OR; Michael Bishop of Zephyr Cove, NV, along with their wives. She was predeceased by her younger brother Robert Pettit of Maryland. Helen was proud of her numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017 at Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell NC, conducted by Mr. John Warren.
