Mary Lee Russell, 82, of Salisbury, passed away on Saturday September 30, 2017 at Aurora of Statesville Nursing Home. Mary was born on November 05, 1934 in Rockwell, to the late William Frank Russell and Katherine Graham Russell (Forrester).
Mary Lee set off on her own and headed to Chicago after graduating from Rockwell High School. She was always a very determined woman. There she went on to further her education, work a variety of jobs, and built her own house. She soon met her destiny in working for the United States Postal Service. She held numerous positions, starting at the bottom as she truly believed one should, and earning many promotions. She ended her distinguished career as the “First Female Federal Postal Inspector in the state of Illinois”.
Mary was of the Christian faith and she enjoyed many activities. Most of all was in battling her sister and brother in law or anyone else in any card game or board game, especially Parcheesi along with her later in life passion = pool. She never liked to lose in anything, especially a good argument.
She eventually returned home to assist her sister in taking care of their ailing mother in 1982. She moved from a large rural plot she purchased in Kannapolis after her return and built a nice homestead on over 20 acres. She moved to her last house and another one of her great loves, High Rock Lake
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Russell Fleming (Frank); her brother, James Forrester (Frances); and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins on both the Graham and Russell sides of the family.
Mary is survived by nephews, M. Lee Fleming of Cornelius (Jennifer), Frank Thomas Fleming of Mooresville, Tommy Forrester (Beverly & sons), Roy Forrester (Amy & daughters), along with several cousins of the deceased.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday October 3, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Powles Staton Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Chaplain, Dan Swan.
