Martha Juanita Shirley Johnson, 95, of Salisbury, formerly of Charlotte and Rockwell, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2017, at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury. Mrs. Johnson was born on December 1, 1921, in Lavonia, GA, to the late Coyt and Ira Ann Mayfield Shirley.
Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Charlotte Central High School and then attended Nursing School. She worked as a Medical Secretary for Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, retiring in 1969. Mrs. Johnson then went to work for Cabarrus Construction Company, later working for the Census Bureau and Rockwell Farms.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Rockwell United Methodist Church where she was a former Lay Leader, Sunday School Teacher, member of the church choir, hand bell choir, and United Methodist Women. Always active in her community, she was a former Scout Leader and volunteer for the Homeless Shelter, Literacy Council, and Habitat for Humanity. She was also a previous participant with the Emmanuel Emmaus Walk.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Eugene Johnson, Sr., son, Marvin Eugene Johnson, Jr., grandson, Joseph Matthew Henderson, and eight siblings.
She is survived by her daughters, Penni Henderson and husband, Mike, of Fayetteville, Marty Perry and husband, Steve, of Zebulon, and Becky Castor and husband, Jerry, of Rockwell, 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 2:45 PM on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Powles Staton Funeral Home in Rockwell followed by the funeral service at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Powles Staton Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell.
