Edward Alan Hirst, Sr., 85, of Salisbury, entered the Church Triumphant on August 9, 2017 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury, after a long and courageous battle for life since 2003. He was born on July 18, 1932, to William E. Hirst, Jr., and Doris Madden Hirst in Liberty, New York.

He was raised and educated in Middletown, New York and received both his BS and MS Degrees in Industrial Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. A veteran, he served his country during the Korean War as a surveyor with the US Army Corps of Engineers as they remapped Germany following the destruction of the country from World War II. irst, Sr., 8

He came south to Salisbury in the early fifties as plant engineer for Leisure Lads. He was a partner in Rob-Lee, Inc. and eventually formed his own businesses, Robert- Alan and then Pioneer Mfg, Inc., an apparel manufacturing firm for boy’s and men’s suits and outerwear, with locations in Salisbury, Gastonia and eastern NC. He was a life member of the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post #342, and served in many offices, including Post Commander and Adjutant for a number of years. He also served the American Legion on District, Division and State levels. A member of Voiture #115 of the 40 & 8, he served as Chef de Gare and Correspondant. He served several terms on the North Carolina Veteran’s Affairs Commission, having been appointed by two state Governors, both James Martin and James Hunt. He was also a member of the VFW Post #3006 and the Salisbury Elks Lodge. For many years he served his community as a Republican Judge for Sumner Precinct. He was an avid volunteer for the Rowan Museum, Mural Preservation, and Tar Heel Girls State.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Harry Mallen, his sister, Alice Mallen Daniels, and his first wife, Angie S. Mooney.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of almost forty years, Kaye Brown Hirst, sons William Hirst and wife Carla of Fort Mill, S.C, Jeffrey Hirst, Edward Jr. and wife Debbie, all of Salisbury, and his beloved grandsons, Harley and Liam. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Amy R. Brown of Greenville, SC, brother-in-law Ted R. Brown of Matthews, his dearest and life-long friends, Pat & Marion Holmbraker of Middletown, New York, and his Doberman’s, Mariah and Winnie.

Visitation and reception will be held Sunday evening, August 13, from 5 - 7 pm in the Messinger Room of the Rowan Museum at 202 North Main Street, Salisbury. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 14, at 11 a.m. at Organ Lutheran Church, 1515 Organ Church Road, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Carlin Ours, with inurnment in the church columbarium. The Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the NC National Guard will provide military graveside rites.

The family would like to thank the wonderful physicians and their staffs who helped Ed so much in his struggle for life: Drs. Amy Wilson, Larry Gish, Tommy Thompson, LeighAnne Dorton, Greg Mitro, Chris Agner, Neil Patel, Mark Wimmer, Telly Meadows, Sam Roy and the staff of Presbyterian Cardio & Vascular Dept., and NC Baptist Hospital Otolaryngology Unit. Many thanks also to Rowan Hospice, especially his home nurse, Angie Harrison, and the Kiser Hospice House staff.
