Roy Calvin McCarter, Sr., 87, commonly referred to as Sonny or Mac, of China Grove, NC, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2017. Mr. McCarter was born September 15, 1929, in Davie County, NC to the late Earnest Martin McCarter and Esther Dyson McCarter Cockrell and was raised by his grandparents, the late Elicke and Thursa O'Neal.
Mr. McCarter was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was employed by Wagoner Construction Company from 1960-2001. During his career, he was the Superintendent of the job sites for Swink Plant, Wachovia, NC Finishing Company, and Stalite. He was a member of South China Grove Baptist Church since 1977 and was a member of American Legion Post 185 and AMVETS Post 565.
Dad was an avid gardener, growing more then he needed so he could share with others. He shared his construction knowledge with whomever would ask. He starting laying brick at the age of 14 and worked extra job sites on the weekend where he would pour concrete driveways and garages to make sure his kids had what they needed. He was a race fan from the 50s and 60s, having driven a stock car for Fred Ervin and winning a few modified races. He enjoyed squirrel and rabbit hunting, but most of all he loved going fishing with his late son-in-law, Sonny Miller, at the Carolina Coast.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 15 years, Ann Dixon McCarter in 1992, wife of 25 years and mother of his children, Irene King McCarter in 2011, daughter, Mary Katherine McCarter in 1959, brother, Earnest M. McCarter, Jr. in 1998, and sister, Patsy McCarter Hulon Campbell in 2012.
He is survived by his children, Sylvia McCarter Miller of High Rock Lake, Shanna Barnhardt (Phil) of China Grove, Esther McCarter of Richmond, VA, and Roy C. McCarter, Jr. (Synthia), of Enochville, brother, Jack B. McCarter of Hagerstown, MD, grandchildren, B.L. "Buddy" Miller, Mary Miller Gray, Larry Barnhadrt, Chad Barnhardt and wife Brandi, Laz Bancroft, Jake Bancroft, Tabitha Clinkscale, Jonathan McCarter, Zack McCarter, and Mary Pappas McCarter; great-grandchildren, Luke, Lydia, Makayla, Matthew, Aden, Kia, Alia, Bryson, Rayland, and Owen, and special neighbor and friend, Renee Wilhelm, who has become a sister.
The family will visit with friends and relatives from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, August 6, 2017, at Powles Staton Funeral Home in Rockwell.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 7, in South China Grove Baptist Church followed by interment at West Lawn Memorial Park with Military Graveside Rites by the U.S. Marine Corp and Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
