Eugene "Gene" Franklin Thompson, 88, of Salisbury, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at the North Carolina State Veteran's Home in Sailsbury. He was born on August 3, 1928 in Rowan County to the late James Frank Thompson and Mattie Morris Thompson. Mr. Thompson proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Gene was a charter and active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church until his decline in health. He was the Owner and Operator of Thompson Grocery Store and was a member of the Rockwell Amvets Post 845 as well as the American Legion Post 112 of Rockwell. Gene will be remembered as a man who cared deeply about his community and helped everyone that he could.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Christie Shuping Thompson; a sister, Pansie Bame; half-sisters, Rena Kincaid, Grace Koontz, Willie Overcash, Annie Thompson, and Mabel Roberson; and half brother, Roy Thompson.
He is survived by his daughter, Melissa Nolan of Salisbury, NC; a sister, Odessa Thompson of Salisbury, NC; his granddaughter, Gena Waller of Salisbury, NC; two great-grandchildren, Carina Waller and Patrick Nolan; niece and nephew, Pat Smith of Salisbury, and Sonny Bame and wife of China Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (3070 Hwy. 152 E , Salisbury, NC 28146). The Funeral service will follow the visitation at 3:00 pm at the Church conducted by Pastor Kay Overcash. Burial will take place at Brookhill Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will be provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the North Carolina National Guard.
