Virdie "Kenneth" Ritchie, 81, of Salisbury, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury.
He was born on July 4, 1935 to the late Walter Durant and Ella Mae Davis Ritchie in Spencer, NC. Kenneth was a 1953 graduate of Boyden High School. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving as an M.P. at Fort Hood, TX. Kenneth worked for Douglas Aircraft where he worked on projects for the Apollo Program, and then he worked for and retired from PPG. While at PPG Kenneth and is team were credited with designing the world's largest fiberglass furnace at that time.
Kenneth was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Salisbury. He was a past Master of Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge # 576, a member of the Salisbury York Rite, Oasis Temple, the Rowan Shrine Club, and the Spencer Moose Lodge.
Kenneth enjoyed fishing, yard work, woodworking and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Kenneth was preceded in death by brother, Walter Max Ritchie, and sister, Ella Jeanette Rusher.
Kenneth is survived by his wife of over 59 years, Frankie Ruth Ritchie, whom he married on January 12, 1958; three sons, Greg Ritchie and wife Deborah of Pinnacle, NC, Scott Ritchie and wife Wendy of Salisbury, and Brad Ritchie and wife Lauren of Winterville, NC; daughter, Crystal R. Whitley and husband Dee of Rocky Mount, NC; 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; and sister, Betty Sue Haney and husband Wade of Charlotte.
Visitation will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 12:30 to 2:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Salisbury, NC, with Pastor John Tucker, officiating.
Burial with military honors will be conducted on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at 9:00 am at the Salisbury National Cemetery (202 Government Road Salisbury NC 28144).
In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Kenneth may be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church 1908 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC 28144 or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
