Samuel Worth Batten, Sr., 91, of Gold Hill, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury. Samuel was born on June 9, 1925 in Columbus County, NC, to the late Albert and Maudie (Price) Batten. Mr. Batten proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army.
He attended Columbus County Schools. Samuel worked as a farmer and also in construction as a carpenter, helping to build Disney World. Samuel was a member of Gold Hill Wesleyan Church and a member of Senior Dancers in Albemarle and Concord. He enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens and loved dancing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Hattie Watts.
Samuel is survived by six children: Samuel W. Batten, Jr. and wife Louise of Hope Mills, NC, Shirley Marshall of Virginia, Larry Batten of Fayetteville, GA, Sandra Berdeaux and husband David of Tuscon, AZ, Kathy Soles and husband Terry of Whiteville, NC, and Willie Batten of Whiteville, NC; one son-in-law, Brady Watts of Nakina, NC; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 12:30-2 PM at Peacock Funeral Home, 1227 S Madison St., Whiteville, NC 28472. A graveside service will follow the visitation at 2 PM in Columbus Memorial Park, Whiteville.
