James Herman Carter, Jr., 93, of Rockwell passed away on Friday, August 5, 2016, at the W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury. Mr. Carter was born on July 14, 1923 in Jamaica, NY son of the late James Herman Carter, Sr. and Mary Frances Rochester Carter.
James was a graduate of the New York City Schools and RCA Electronics School. He was the owner operator of Jim's TV & Appliance Store until he retired in 1989 and moved to North Carolina.
James was Veteran of World War II having served in the US Army. He was a member of Freedom Christian Worship Center, Rockwell, a master gardener, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, and loved to go on cruises with family.
In addition to his parents James was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Graves Carter; son, James H. Carter, III. Brother Willie Carter; and sisters, Mary Powell and Elizabeth Taylor.
James is survived by his wife of over 16 years, Josephine S. Carter who he married on December 26, 1999. children, Sandra Carter Smiling and husband Carl of Concord, Deborah Carter Edlow and husband Herman of Long Island, NY, Gregory Keith Carter of Rockwell, Pamela Carter Gibson of Concord, Melanie Carter Venable and husband Charles of Concord, Jeffrey Carter and wife Janice Frances Carter of Long Island, NY, Joseph Carter of Kannapolis. Step-son, Desmond Gibbs and wife Chavonne of Long Island, NY; Sisters, Constance Harris, Marniska Williams and Ann Martin all of New Jersey. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation: The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 10th from 5 to 7 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home.
Service: The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 11th at 11:30 am at the Powles Staton Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Steven Hamman, Pastor of Freedom Christian Worship Center. Burial will follow in the Historic Salisbury National Cemetery (202 Government Rd Salisbury NC 28144) at 1:00 pm.
