LaVerne Shaw McKinney, 90, of Granite Quarry, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 9, 2019.
She was born November 18, 1928, in Rowan County to the late Roy and Oneda Shaw. Mrs. McKinney was a 1947 graduate of Granite Quarry High School. In her early years, she worked at Harrison's Grocery in Salisbury. She met her husband, P.H. McKinney, on a blind date that led to 70 wonderful years of marriage that began July 11, 1948. Mrs. McKinney was a member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church in Granite Quarry where she was active with the LCW and her Sunday School Class. She loved cooking, riding horses in her younger days, spending time at the beach with her family, taking boat rides along the Intracoastal Waterway, and traveling to the mountains. Mr. and Mrs. McKinney enjoyed traveling and visited all 50 states, many of them several times. She was an avid thrift store shopper and enjoyed going to yard sales every Saturday, always hunting a bargain. Always a "people person," she never met a stranger. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor she promised the Lord after her recovery that she would make someone smile or laugh everyday and became known as the "joke lady" everywhere she went, especially at K&W Cafeteria.
Mrs. McKinney is survived by her husband, P.H. McKinney; three children, Chris McKinney of Granite Quarry, Barry McKinney and wife, Annette, of Granite Quarry, and Jancy McKinney Ketchie (the late Bobby Ketchie) of Gold Hill; sister, Sylvia Barger and husband, Buddy, of Faith; four grandchildren, Travis Ketchie of Gold Hill, Kadie Julian and husband, Baker, of Gold Hill, Kodi McKinney and wife, Genna, of Salisbury, and Kayla McKinney of Granite Quarry; great-granddaughter, Sarah McKinney; and one great-grandchild on the way.
